Old dogs need to be coddled more then young dogs do. Young dogs have more stamina for just about everything so the heat does not affect them as much as it does an older dog. Yet all dogs need to be protected from the heat. Never leave any dog unattended in a car if there is even a slight chance that they might get too hot. And always be aware of the temperature where ever your dog is.

When it gets hot out my Labrador still wants to chase the ball. So I have to intervene and tell him that it is too hot to play ball and that he should take it easy. My Labrador thinks chasing a ball is much more important then anything else on the planet. But he is getting old and I think he is too the point where he should not chase any ball on a hot day. So I make him sit in the air conditioned house. We still play fetch the ball in the house but it is not the same. He wants to play in the big open fields.

All dogs need to be cared for. Sometimes a dog may want to play more then pay attention to his body. I always remember that if I am hot my dog probably is too. If my dog and I are not together I try to imagine what it is like where he is so I am always trying to keep track of what temperature his is in. A dog depends on us for their safety and comfort. We must always think about how they are feeling.

On really hot days I keep my dog in the air conditioned house. He is l2 years old and can't take the heat like he used too. If it is not intolerable outside I will let him stay in the shade outside. I am always aware of what the climate and temperature is where he is.

On really hot days I put ice cubes in his water dish. He has grown to love it and looks forward to his ice. The cooler water cools him off more I am sure. Sometimes it is great to get a treat. Dogs like a special treat too from time to time.

A cool bath can be a fun cool way to beat the heat on a hot day. But I never give him a cold bath if he is over heated. It is best to let your dog cool off slowly if the dog gets over heated.

Make sure your dog is always comfortable. It doesn't hurt to treat you dog well.

The successful collaboration of Johnny Depp and the British actor Orlando Bloom caused Walt Disney to more than double its quarterly profits as DVDs of the second installment of their Pirates of the Caribbean series flew off shop shelves. Disney announced last night that its profits for the three months to December leapt by 145%, rising from $734m (£379m) to $1.7bn. As a result, the Los Angeles-based company has enjoyed a astonishing run of financial success. Even reflecting successes with its shares, which were among Wall Street's top performers last year with a rise of more than 40%.

Disney can claim top honor for the two of the top selling DVDs of the year – Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and the animated feature film Cars, which was made by the group's Pixar studio. Chief executive Bob Iger said: “These results are particularly gratifying given the great year we had in 2006 and are another clear sign our strategy is driving growth and creating shareholder value.” Disney's Hollywood film division was responsible for the bulk of the improved profits. The movie-making arm's earnings rocketed from $128m to $604m.

Depp stars in his next project, “Shantaram,” based on the life story of Gregory David Roberts, whose book of the same name describes his escape from an Australian prison to Mumbai and his adventures with the city's powerful mafia dons. Roberts, who was later captured and extradited to Australia, now lives in Mumbai and has set up a free health service for the poor and does some teaching, the author says on his Web site www.shantaram.com.

The talented Mira Nair one of the leading directors in Hollywood is set for directing the project. The Indian born director now rises to the challenge of directing one of Hollywood's leading men Johnny Deep. She said when asked about her thoughts on Deep as lead in the film-, “Johnny Depp is such an extraordinary human being and an extraordinary actor and he embodies so much what Shantaram is and so when he asked me to direct him it was obviously a great honor and challenge for me.”

Nair was born in the eastern Indian state of Orissa in 1957 left for the United States at the age of 19 after receiving a scholarship from Harvard University. Her debut film, “Salaam Bombay!” (1988) about Mumbai won the Golden Camera Award at the Cannes Film Festival that same year. Other works that won Nair critically acclaimed include “Mississippi Masala” (1991), “Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love” (1996), “Monsoon Wedding” (2001), “Vanity Fair” (2004) and “The Namesake” (2006). Nair confirmed that the filming of “Shantaram” starring Depp is to commence very soon. “Well, I have just got the offer a few days back but I will start with it soon. It is a book that completely gripped me as it did millions of others.”

While Depp and Pirates has greatly enhanced profits and the success of Disney, Disney's ABC television network in America, driven by dramas such as Grey's Anatomy and Lost also saw higher profits Tuna Amobi, an analyst at Standard & Poor's, said: “Disney had a particularly good summer and holiday season. Pixar is now in the mix and has a lot to do with the film studio's performance.” However, for Disney's new theme park in Hong Kong things are not going nearly as well as anticipated. The new theme park opened in September 2005 and has already suffered from diminishing in attendance ever since.

To some visitors, perhaps the only vaguely magic thing in Swindon is the seven-island road junction beside the fire station, which is so baffling it has been branded the “magic roundabout”. But that hasn't stopped Disney World in Florida selecting the Wiltshire town as the first twin town in its 38-year history.

The other parallels are equally hard to fathom – the Orlando theme park counts Mickey Mouse, Pluto and Snow White among it denizens, while Swindon boasts Melinda Messenger, Mark Lamarr and Billie Piper. But Disney executives today yesterday chose Swindon ahead of 24 other British towns, including Blackpool, which at least has a rollercoaster, and Brighton, which has a helter-skelter and a ghost train.

Perhaps tellingly, the Disney executives picked Swindon not by visiting, but by watching a video slideshow produced by resident Rebecca Warren, 20.

She managed to draw implausible but ingenious parallels between a local zoo and the Animal Kingdom section of Disney World, her local cinema and Disney's vast Hollywood Studio, and the famous roundabout and Disney's teacup ride.

“She made us laugh,” said Dave Coombs, a Disney World spokesman, celebrating a clever piece of public relations for the theme park, whose slogan is “Where dreams come true”.

Warren said: “I still cannot believe that my entry has been selected – it's fantastic. What a great opportunity for Swindon.”

Her prize involves a trip with her nephew, Aaron, 11, and niece, Amy, five, to Florida to unveil a “Walt Disney World twinned with Swindon” plaque.

In January, Disney World will send a parade of characters to “bring a whole lot of Disney magic” to the town. The opportunity to claim twinned status only lasts a year.

“I can't believe that Swindon has won despite the bad press,” said Anne Snelgrove, the South Swindon Labour MP, who was quick to try to turn the announcement to political advantage. “I am sure I could nominate seven Tory councillors to play the seven dwarves. Their budget-setting is totally Mickey Mouse.”
